January 25th - Snow Day
Snow Day
There's magic falling out of the sky! Will winter finally arrive?!
Two days ago, you could find me frowning and trying to crease jowls onto my face as I tucked away the CC skis, but now I get to pull them back out and see the park again in its quiet time. This snow is sticky and perfect for building, and my son was actively angry at school administration for not canceling school on such a glorious day of snow fort/fight potential.
A snow like this coats the trees and glazes the bare branches with highlights. The squirrels run into their holes, which means I can finally put out more bird seed and see that tufted titmouse I spied recently. A raccoon has taken refuge next to my house by an air exhaust and it seems likely that some neighbor has been feeding her with her active interest in me. She has been around a few times now, which makes me a little concerned for my cat. I should name the raccoon and then I'd like her better.
I had this idea to make a lamp out of this huge bald-faced hornet nest I saw in the park, those big paper globe ones. I have this neighbor that collects them in winter to adorn his man cave and was once telling me to make certain that if I collect one to put it in deep freeze for at least a month because he has accidentally introduced a live colony that thawed out and wreaked havoc in his sacred space. I like trying to picture that chaos, total Hitchcock moment.
